History of Barbie: How A Dream Doll Became a Cultural Phenomenon?
Barbie is one of the most popular dolls in the world, and has been for over 60 years. But who created Barbie, and how did she become such an icon? Barbie was created by Ruth Handler co-founder of the Mattel toy company. Handler was inspired to create Barbie after watching her daughter, Barbara, play with paper dolls. Barbara loved to give the paper dolls adult roles, and Handler realized that there was a gap in the market for a doll that could allow girls to do the same.
In 1956, Handler traveled to Europe with her family. While there, she saw a German doll called Bild Lilli. Bild Lilli was a racy fashion doll that was popular with adults, and Handler was struck by its adult proportions. She realized that this was the kind of doll that she wanted to create for girls.
The Creation of Barbie
Handler returned to the United States and began working on the design of Barbie. She wanted the doll to be stylish and fashionable, but she also wanted it to be aspirational. She wanted Barbie to represent the kind of woman that girls could aspire to be.
Barbie was officially introduced to the world at the American International Toy Fair in New York City in 1959. The doll was an immediate success, and it quickly became one of the most popular toys in the world.
The Evolution of Barbie
Over the years, Barbie has evolved to reflect the changing times. She has held over 200 different jobs, from astronaut to doctor to president. She has also been featured in countless movies, television shows, and books.
Today, Barbie is a global icon. She is celebrated for her role in empowering girls and encouraging them to dream big. She is also a target of criticism, with some people arguing that her unrealistic body image sends a negative message to girls.
Barbie: From Paper Doll to Silver Screen
