Barbie was created by Ruth Handler co-founder of the Mattel toy company. Handler was inspired to create Barbie after watching her daughter, Barbara, play with paper dolls. Barbara loved to give the paper dolls adult roles, and Handler realized that there was a gap in the market for a doll that could allow girls to do the same.

In 1956, Handler traveled to Europe with her family. While there, she saw a German doll called Bild Lilli. Bild Lilli was a racy fashion doll that was popular with adults, and Handler was struck by its adult proportions. She realized that this was the kind of doll that she wanted to create for girls.

The Creation of Barbie

Handler returned to the United States and began working on the design of Barbie. She wanted the doll to be stylish and fashionable, but she also wanted it to be aspirational. She wanted Barbie to represent the kind of woman that girls could aspire to be.

Barbie was officially introduced to the world at the American International Toy Fair in New York City in 1959. The doll was an immediate success, and it quickly became one of the most popular toys in the world.

The movie is directed by Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach, the film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. It also features an ensemble cast that includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, and Issa Rae.

The film follows Barbie and Ken as they are expelled from Barbieland for not being perfect enough. They must embark on an adventure in the real world to figure out who they really are. The Barbie movie has been in development for several years, with different directors and writers attached at different times. Gerwig and Baumbach were officially brought on board in 2019, and production began in 2022. The film had released in theaters on July 21, 2023
